Who we are and what we’re about!
‘21st Century Families’ began as a group of mums, dads and other carers who joined forces with educational professionals in the East Kilbride and Cambuslang/Rutherglen areas in response to the challenge of raising a healthy, happy and resilient child in the 21st Century. We were inspired by Sue Palmer, educationalist and author of ‘Toxic Childhood’ who has given inspiring presentations throughout South Lanarkshire on 21st century factors which affect children’s development.
In an electronic, media rich age, children are spending up to 5-6 hours a day on screen based activities. As a result of this, children have less opportunities to engage in active play, family time and to simply talk to each other. They are also influenced by marketing forces which affect the choices children make in terms of all aspects of their lifestyle i.e. diet, games, fashion, accessories and most importantly their values.
We understand and appreciate that technology is a fantastic source of learning, information and entertainment for children and has an important place in 21st century life, however increasing the amount of time children have to play will have positive benefits for their physical, emotional and social health.
21st Century Families believe it is everyone’s responsibility to nurture and protect our children and our motto is “Give Childhood Back to Children”. The group aim is to give ideas and provide some down to earth advice to other parents and carers in helping to reclaim our children’s childhood and improve their well-being in the future. We are looking to involve as many similar-minded parents and carers in our 21st Century Families initiative.
